Chapter 15: Lina

Lina could hear the father and son arguing just outside, and it was a doozy. She flinched at Bogdan’s words about Viktor’s mother, knowing how they must be hurting Viktor to hear. But Viktor was shooting right back at him, and she could tell that he had hurt Bogdan because of Bogdan’s threat to take Lina away from Viktor.

He could tell that Viktor cared for Lina, he said. Was that true? Did he honestly like her—more than like her, as his actions had been suggesting this entire time? It seemed to be enough to convince his father of the fact.

Lina breathed a small sigh of relief. She needed Viktor to be the one guarding her. All he’d done so far was try to kiss her while he was drunk, and he’d stopped and apologized the moment that she’d shown she wasn’t into it. Who knew what the other men would do—

Someone was approaching the door.

Lina scrambled backwards, back onto the bed, just as Vladimir swung the door open. He didn’t seem to notice that the door was already open a crack, but he did make sure to close it all the way behind him.

This was a soundproof room, Lina remembered. She felt like vomiting. Viktor was distracted by his father. Vladimir could come at her and no amount of screaming would get Viktor’s attention.

Vladimir looked her up and down, not being at all shy about it. “Still in that stuffy robe?” He clucked his tongue and shook his head. “I know you have something much nicer underneath that. You should get comfortable.”

Lina sat up straight and glared at him. “You don’t belong in here. Get out.”

“I don’t belong in here? Are you sure of that?” Vladimir smiled, like he could already see himself staying in this room, doing whatever he wanted to her.

Lina did her best not to wilt with fear. It felt like she was getting pumped full of ice. She focused instead on her anger. She pictured stomping on Vladimir’s face until it was nothing but a bloody pulp. “Get. Out.”

“I’m not so sure about that. You see, your current boyfriend, he and his father are having a bit of a tense discussion. Perhaps Bogdan decides that you’ll be better off with me, hmm?” Vladimir’s eyes slid over to the tray, on which sat the shot glasses, and then the side of the bed, where she’d left the mostly-empty bottle. “Somebody was having a good time. Mind if I join in myself?”

“Get out,” Lina repeated, letting her voice fill with as much rage as she could muster. She couldn’t show fear, she couldn’t show fear, she couldn’t show fear. Sharks could smell fear.

Vladimir gave a very put-upon sigh. “I suppose, for now, I’ll let you be alone.” He opened the door again, and Lina held her breath to keep from sobbing out in relief. “But don’t forget me, little bird. I’ve been thinking of you, you know. What you’d feel like. Whether I’d—”

There was a growl behind them, and Vladimir whipped around.
