Chapter 15: Lina
Lina could hear the father and son arguing just outside, and it was a doozy. She flinched at Bogdanâs words about Viktorâs mother, knowing how they must be hurting Viktor to hear. But Viktor was shooting right back at him, and she could tell that he had hurt Bogdan because of Bogdanâs threat to take Lina away from Viktor.
He could tell that Viktor cared for Lina, he said. Was that true? Did he honestly like herâmore than like her, as his actions had been suggesting this entire time? It seemed to be enough to convince his father of the fact.
Lina breathed a small sigh of relief. She needed Viktor to be the one guarding her. All heâd done so far was try to kiss her while he was drunk, and heâd stopped and apologized the moment that sheâd shown she wasnât into it. Who knew what the other men would doâ
Someone was approaching the door.
Lina scrambled backwards, back onto the bed, just as Vladimir swung the door open. He didnât seem to notice that the door was already open a crack, but he did make sure to close it all the way behind him.
This was a soundproof room, Lina remembered. She felt like vomiting. Viktor was distracted by his father. Vladimir could come at her and no amount of screaming would get Viktorâs attention.
Vladimir looked her up and down, not being at all shy about it. âStill in that stuffy robe?â He clucked his tongue and shook his head. âI know you have something much nicer underneath that. You should get comfortable.â
Lina sat up straight and glared at him. âYou donât belong in here. Get out.â
âI donât belong in here? Are you sure of that?â Vladimir smiled, like he could already see himself staying in this room, doing whatever he wanted to her.
Lina did her best not to wilt with fear. It felt like she was getting pumped full of ice. She focused instead on her anger. She pictured stomping on Vladimirâs face until it was nothing but a bloody pulp. âGet. Out.â
âIâm not so sure about that. You see, your current boyfriend, he and his father are having a bit of a tense discussion. Perhaps Bogdan decides that youâll be better off with me, hmm?â Vladimirâs eyes slid over to the tray, on which sat the shot glasses, and then the side of the bed, where sheâd left the mostly-empty bottle. âSomebody was having a good time. Mind if I join in myself?â
âGet out,â Lina repeated, letting her voice fill with as much rage as she could muster. She couldnât show fear, she couldnât show fear, she couldnât show fear. Sharks could smell fear.
Vladimir gave a very put-upon sigh. âI suppose, for now, Iâll let you be alone.â He opened the door again, and Lina held her breath to keep from sobbing out in relief. âBut donât forget me, little bird. Iâve been thinking of you, you know. What youâd feel like. Whether Iâdââ
There was a growl behind them, and Vladimir whipped around.
